    What do I need to enter Zanzibar? All visitors must have travel insurance from Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC) visitzanzibar.go.tz
    A visa is also required and can be obtained on arrival at the airport. However, travelers from some countries must apply online  in advance, so it’s important to check the requirements before your trip. visa.immigration.go.tz

  • When is the best time to visit Zanzibar? Zanzibar is great for travel year-round, but the best months are from October to March. April and May are the rainy season, but showers are usually short and occur at night.
  • What is the weather like in Zanzibar? Temperatures range from +25°C to +33°C throughout the year. The ocean is always warm, around +27°C. Humidity is high, especially from November to April.
  • Should I be concerned about the rainy season? Rain occurs mainly in April and May, but it’s usually short-lived, with the sun coming out quickly afterward. Outside of these months, rain is rare and brief.

  • Which mobile network is best? Tigo, Vodacom, and Zantel offer the best mobile internet. SIM cards are available at the airport (more expensive) and in town. A passport is required for purchase.
  • Is there Wi-Fi? Wi-Fi is available in hotels, cafés, and restaurants, but speeds can be slow. For reliable internet, it’s best to use a local SIM card.Language & Communication
  • What languages are spoken in Zanzibar? The official languages are Swahili and English. English is widely spoken in tourist areas.

  • How do I get from the airport? A taxi is the most convenient option. It’s recommended to pre-book a transfer as airport taxi prices can be inflated.
  • Can I rent a car? Yes, but you will need a local driving permit, which rental agencies can arrange for you. Driving is on the left, and road conditions vary.
  • What transportation options are available? Common options include taxis, local minibuses (“dala dala” — the cheapest way), and scooter rentals.
  • Safety & Health


  • Is Zanzibar safe? Zanzibar is generally safe for tourists, but it’s advisable to be mindful of belongings in crowded places. Avoid walking alone at night in deserted areas.
  • Are vaccinations required? No mandatory vaccinations, but it’s recommended to get Hepatitis A & B, Tetanus, and Typhoid shots. Taking malaria precautions (repellents, covering up in the evening) is also advisable.
  • Can I drink tap water? No, always drink bottled water to avoid stomach issues.Food & Dining

  • What currency is used in Zanzibar? The official currency is the Tanzanian shilling (TZS), but US dollars (bills from 2009 and later) are widely accepted in tourist areas.
  • Where can I exchange money? It’s best to exchange money at official exchange offices or banks. The exchange rate at the airport is usually less favorable.
  • Can I pay by card? Major hotels and restaurants accept cards, but many places operate on a cash-only basis. It’s advisable to carry Tanzanian shillings for markets, small cafés, and tours.
  • Are there ATMs on the island? Yes, ATMs are available in Stone Town, Nungwi, and other major areas, but not all cards work, and withdrawal fees can be high.
